The Process
Step 1 - Consultation
We talk about what you want, set a time line and a budget. A percentage of the cost is paid upfront as a deposit. Family History Books require more research so we will discuss interview times as well.
Step 2 - Gather and Collect
If we’re making a book from a recent event, most likely we will just be dealing with digital files which can be shared via iCloud, Dropbox, Box or a USB key. Don’t forget other interesting details you’ve collected - maps, flyers, post cards, foreign currency, menus, candy wrappers, programs… almost anything goes! If we are designing a family history book, consider fabrics, lace, medals and awards, letters, recipes, news clippings and other memorabilia.
Step 3 - Digitize & Design
This is all me. I take care of scanning, either in our studio or at a trusted local imaging company (Millers Imaging is my favorite, but I’m willing to work with anyone you prefer.) I help take photos out of frames and reframe when we’re done. Typically, very fragile photos will be scanned and returned the next day.
Next I set to work laying out your book. Give this some time. The artist is working!
Step 4 - Proof
I can send either digital or paper proofs and allow for 2 rounds of edits.
Step 5 - Print and Bind
The standard photo book project is produced through Blurb or MyPublisher. Copies are available for purchase directly from them and can be reordered anytime.
For family history books, I go local. The books are printed on archival paper and bound locally. It’s an investment that will pay off in literally generations of use!
